Callus Shaver AKA “Skin Scraper 3000”
What is it?
A callus shaver is a handheld tool designed to remove thickened or hardened skin, usually on hands or feet. It features a sharp blade or file that gently trims down calluses, keeping skin smooth and preventing painful tears or cracks. Proper hand care is crucial for boulderers, as healthy skin ensures better grip and reduces the risk of injuries. For additional tips on handcare and callus management, check out here.
How I use it?
I use a callus shaver after long bouldering sessions to manage the build-up of tough skin on my hands. A quick post-session scrape ensures my calluses are functional—not liabilities—before they snag on a hold or, worse, rip mid-climb. Using a callus shaver for bouldering regularly helps prevent flappers and keeps my hands in peak condition. If I didn’t use one, I’d risk those dreaded injuries that could disrupt training for a week or more.
Why I chose it?
I chose a callus shaver after learning the hard way (literally) that letting calluses grow unchecked can lead to painful hand injuries. It’s a climber’s secret weapon for maintaining hand health while keeping skin tough enough to crush problems. Plus, there’s something oddly satisfying about shedding layers of dead skin.
