Climbing Plateaus: Why You’re Stuck at B4 (and How to Break Through)

Climbing Plateaus: Why You’re Stuck at B4 (and How to Break Through)

You’ve been stuck on B4 for what feels like forever. You’re climbing regularly, trying hard, and yet… no progress.

Breaking bouldering plateaus is a natural part of any climber’s journey—but that doesn’t mean you have to stay stuck. For more insight on climbing plateaus and tips to overcome them, check out 10 Tips to Overcome a Climbing Plateau – Method Climb.

Whether you’re chasing your first V4 or eyeing up the 6’s, these tips apply. And if you’re ready to take things seriously, this could be the perfect time to book a coaching session.

  1. Your Mindset Is Holding You Back

Problem: You climb within your comfort zone, avoid failure, or go on autopilot during sessions.

Solution:

  • Embrace discomfort. Progress lives outside your comfort zone.
  • Try harder climbs, even if you don’t send. Attempts build experience.
  • Be intentional. Set goals for each session—technique, effort, or volume.

  1. Your Technique Needs Work

Problem: You’ve built some strength but your movement efficiency is limiting your progress.

Solution:

  • Film your climbs and look for unnecessary movements or hesitations.
  • Focus on body positioning—your centre of mass dictates control.
  • Find alternate beta and repeat boulders that make you feel uncomfortable.

Refining your technique is often the fastest way to break through performance ceilings.

  1. You’re Not Strong Enough (Yet)

Problem: You’re maxed out on basic moves, especially on overhangs and small holds.

Solution:

  • Incorporate short, focused strength sessions: hangboarding in your warm-up, core work, and pull strength.
  • Avoid overtraining, 3 sessions per week can be enough if you’re intentional.
  • Use our gym or book in with a coach to learn climbing-specific exercises. Learn more in our Train Blogs.

Strength won’t solve everything—but it gives you the capacity to practice at a higher quality.

  1. Your Sessions Lack Structure

Problem: You’re just showing up and climbing, hoping for the best.

Solution:

  • Warm up intentionally (not just a few easy climbs).
  • Have consistent intentions for your sessions: skill-focused, power-focused, and volume-based.
  • Track your progress via filming often, focus on progression of skill execution.

Climbing with structure is what turns casual hobbyists into athletes. And as one of the
best gyms in the Sunshine Coast, we’ve built our space to support that transformation with coaching, training equipment, and recovery tools all under one roof.
