What is Bouldering?
Bouldering is rock climbing without ropes.
Say What??!
That’s right!
Ropeless climbing!
Not to worry, bouldering is done with heavy duty matting below and the climbing height is safely limited.
In an indoor bouldering centre like Bould Move, the highest point the hands will reach is 5m.
To explain bouldering further we should start at the beginning.
Brief History of Bouldering
We come from boulderers.
Countless generations in our ancestry spent large portions of their lives traversing their country across all types of terrain, including boulders. Bouldering is deeply within us. You know this is true if you have spent time watching a growing child climb on everything they possibly can.
The term boulderers started its life french, as bleausards, a common term given to those bouldering in the Fontainebleau commune in France in the early 1900s.
In the late 1950s, an American mathematician John Gill helped in the establishment of bouldering as a separate climbing discipline. Gill had a history in gymnastics and from this background he brought the use of chalk, strength training and difficulty-grading to the sport.
In the 1980s, indoor climbing walls began to emerge.
Fast-forward forty years and there are now hundreds of bouldering gyms worldwide. 2021 will see sport climbing make its Olympic debut, with the Australian team consisting of one male and one female in Tom O’Halloran and Oceana Mackenzie.
Bould Move was lucky enough to have Tom review the wall design and training space. Tom added a couple of his own special touches to the space and agreed that Bould Move is a place capable of growing athletes and the sport to another level on the Sunshine Coast.
What Equipment is Needed to Start Bouldering?
One of the great things about bouldering is the low cost necessary to start.
The only thing that is required are climbing shoes, and these can be hired for minimal cost at most bouldering gyms.
So that’s it!
No need for a partner, supervision, harnesses, knots!
Shoes on and boulder away!!
What Should I Wear Bouldering?
Fortunately boulderers still care more about impressing each other by ‘having a go’ rather than their clothing, so wear what you please, keeping the following in mind:
Bouldering is a workout, so wear something that you’re happy to sweat in.
Avoid movement-restricting clothing.
Feel comfortable.
Is Bouldering Something the Whole Family Can Do?
Bouldering, at Bould Move, is definitely a family friendly thing to do on the Sunshine Coast.
We offer something for everyone, from a kids-only wall through to advanced climbing training facilities, fitness classes, perfect coffee and great food.
What to Expect Your First Time Bouldering
Big walls, bright holds and a friendly bunch of people.
The hold colour of each ‘problem’ will be a specific colour. The difficulty of the problem will either be highlighted on the starting hold or based on the colour itself. The starting and finishing holds will also be highlighted.
A group experience – being close to the ground when bouldering promotes a communicative atmosphere. This closeness creates a wonderful group experience.
Another special attraction of bouldering, is being forced to your performance limit. Bouldering provides an exciting and enjoyable way to enhance strength, mobility and coordination.
Expect to not understand the people that you ask advice from…bouldering lingo is in a world of its own.
